Grayside Elementary is our newest elementary building, serving grades three, four and five. The building, originally a middle school, was remodeled in 2002. It offers excellent facilities, large outdoor space, and a friendly highly qualified staff. In addition, Grayside also houses our District Offices.
Achievement Leadership Team
Grayside dedicates itself to student achievement. A team of teachers meet monthly to discuss test results, data, and best practices. The intent is to explore and disseminate information to better instruct Mauston's students. Our teachers also serve as literacy coaches, differentiation coaches and teacher mentors and model these identified best practices for each other.
Responsive Classroom
The Mauston elementary schools have adapted the Responsive Classroom (RC) approach to teaching and learning. Responsive classroom fosters safe, challenging, and joyful classrooms and schools, kindergarten through eighth grade. Developed by classroom teachers, it consists of practical strategies for bringing together social and academic learning throughout the school day.
Safety
We take student safety seriously. Staff and visitors wear identification at all times, and we dismiss our walking students after our buses leave the campus. This insures a safe flow of traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular.
Class Sizes
Grayside Elementary enjoys small class sizes. We average less than 18 students per classroom, with a student to teacher ratio of just over 11. Our third grade class is part of the Wisconsin Student Achievement Guarantee in Education program (SAGE) which helps us provide smaller class sizes and insures that our curriculum promotes academic achievement.
Curriculum
Grayside utilizes a language arts program by the title of "Literacy by Design". It is a complete reading and writing program with proven positive results. Literacy by Design also integrates science and social studies state standards into the reading and writing program. We have a lexile coded book room that may be accessed by teachers for reading intervention strategies. Accelerated Reader is an individualized computer program that may also be used to differentiate reading instruction.
Everyday Math is our mathmatics program. It is a data proven system for teaching math. Teachers may supplement and differentiate the Everyday Math with an online Accelerated Math program or other appropriate material.
Ninety-minute math and literacy blocks were built into our daily schedule to establish a solid foundation in these core areas.
Music, Computers, Art, Physical Education, Library (MCAPEL)
Grayside has music, computer classes, art, physical education and library media classes for all grades. The students publish a newspaper and produce a regular news program on our own television station, WGES.
